<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Surface</strong> quality after shot blasting is determined by three measurements: the visual cleanliness grade to ISO 8501-1 (Sa 1 – Sa 3), the surface profile to ISO 8503, and invisible contaminants (soluble salts and dust) to ISO 8502. Until all three are checked, no surface is ready for coating.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A surface that merely looks clean is not necessarily a compliant surface.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" style="font-size:24px"><strong>What Does Surface Quality After Shot Blasting Mean?</strong></h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Surface quality</strong> is not a single number but three independently measured elements:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Cleanliness grade: how much rust, mill scale and old paint remains.</li>



<li>Surface profile (roughness): the peak-to-valley depth the abrasive creates — what the coating keys into mechanically.</li>



<li>Contaminant level: soluble salts and dust the eye cannot detect.</li>
</ul>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">One distinction matters: <strong>Sa 2½ is a cleanliness grade, not a roughness value.</strong> Roughness is measured in microns (µm) under ISO 8503. Confusing the two is the most common specification error.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" style="font-size:24px"><strong>How Is Surface Cleanliness Measured? (ISO 8501-1)</strong></h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Cleanliness is judged visually, not with an instrument: the blasted surface is compared with the photographic references of ISO 8501-1 under diffused light. Four grades are defined:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Sa 1 – Light blast cleaning: loose rust, mill scale and paint removed.</li>



<li>Sa 2 – Thorough blast cleaning: most of the surface is clean; light traces may remain.</li>



<li>Sa 2½ – Very thorough blast cleaning: only light shadows or staining remain. The most widely accepted level for industrial coatings.</li>



<li>Sa 3 – Visually clean steel: a uniform metallic colour.</li>
</ul>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">International projects also call for <a href="https://www.ampp.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">AMPP</a> (formerly SSPC and NACE) equivalents; the standards sit in the <a href="https://www.iso.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ISO</a> catalogue.</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Sa 2½: limited shadows or staining may remain. Cycle time and abrasive use stay reasonable; it suits most industrial coatings.</li>



<li>Sa 3: no residue accepted. Longer cycles and higher energy cost; specified for tank linings and aggressive environments.</li>
</ul>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Unless Sa 3 is specified, Sa 2½ balances cost and performance best.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" style="font-size:24px"><strong>How Is Surface Profile (Roughness) Measured?</strong></h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Three methods are recognised under ISO 8503 and ASTM D4417:</p>



<ol class="wp-block-list">
<li>Comparator disc (ISO 8503-1/-2): visual and tactile comparison. Separate discs cover grit (G) and shot (S), with Fine, Medium and Coarse segments. Fast, but gives no number.</li>



<li>Replica tape (ISO 8503-5): foam-layer tape is burnished onto the surface and read with a spring micrometer, minus the carrier film.</li>



<li>Digital depth gauge (ISO 8503-4): an electronic probe reads peak-to-valley depth directly — fastest for high volumes.</li>
</ol>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" style="font-size:20px"><strong>Which Roughness Value Should Be Targeted?</strong></h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The binding answer is in the coating data sheet (TDS). In general:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Grit blasting, ISO 8503-1 segments: roughly 25–60 µm (Fine), 60–100 µm (Medium), 100–150 µm (Coarse).</li>



<li>For shot blasting: roughly 25–40 µm, 40–70 µm and 70–100 µm.</li>



<li>Too shallow and the coating cannot key in; too deep and peaks protrude through the film and corrode early.</li>
</ul>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" style="font-size:24px"><strong>How Are Invisible Contaminants Checked?</strong></h2>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" style="font-size:20px"><strong>How Is the Soluble Salt Test Performed?</strong></h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">With the Bresle method (ISO 8502-6) an adhesive patch is applied, deionised water injected, and the extract measured with a conductivity meter to ISO 8502-9, reported in mg/m². Residual salts draw moisture under the film and cause blistering.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" style="font-size:20px"><strong>How Is the Dust Test Performed?</strong></h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Under ISO 8502-3, adhesive tape is pressed onto the surface and placed on a contrasting background. Dust quantity and particle size are rated separately; the specification sets the limit.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" style="font-size:20px"><strong>Why Are Climatic Conditions Recorded?</strong></h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">ISO 8502-4 covers air temperature, humidity and dew point. Steel must stay at least 3 °C above dew point, or it flash rusts before coating.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" style="font-size:24px"><strong>Step-by-Step Measurement Procedure</strong></h2>

<li>Remove dust with compressed air or vacuum right after blasting.</li>



<li>Grade cleanliness against the ISO 8501-1 photographic standard.</li>



<li>Measure the profile with a comparator disc, replica tape or depth gauge.</li>



<li>Take readings at the points the specification requires; record the average.</li>



<li>Where required, run the Bresle salt test and ISO 8502-3 dust test.</li>



<li>Record air temperature, humidity and dew point.</li>



<li>Report all values against the work order number, then prime.</li>
</ol>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" style="font-size:24px"><strong>How Does the Blasting Machine Affect the Result?</strong></h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Results are never independent of the machine. A continuous, conveyor-type sheet and profile shot blasting machine makes quality repeatable batch to batch. Governing parameters:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Turbine count and angle: a layout with no shadow area on sheet, I/H profiles and angle iron gives a uniform grade.</li>



<li>Conveyor speed: the slower the pass, the higher the grade.</li>



<li>Abrasive type and working mix: grit gives a deeper profile, shot a shallower one; a clean mix keeps the profile stable.</li>



<li>Dust collection: weak filtration leaves dust and degrades the ISO 8502-3 result.</li>
</ul>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" style="font-size:24px"><strong>What Is Sheet Shot Blasting?</strong></h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Shot blasting</strong> propels steel shot or grit at high velocity against the surface, cleaning and roughening it at the same time. On <strong><a href="https://www.strongmakine.com/en/sheet-and-profile-shot-blasting-machine/">sheet and profile blasting machines</a></strong> this runs as a continuous (conveyor) process, so plates and profiles are treated in a single pass.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" style="font-size:24px"><strong>Why Is Blasting Before Painting Essential?</strong></h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Blasting before painting has two core goals: to clean the surface and to create the profile the paint anchors into. The reasons are:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Surface cleanliness: rust, mill scale, oil, and weld slag block paint from bonding to steel. Loose mill scale later flakes off on its own and takes the coating with it.</li>



<li>Surface profile: blasting creates a peak-and-valley anchor pattern that the paint mechanically locks into.</li>



<li>Corrosion resistance: on a properly prepared surface the coating lasts far longer and early corrosion is prevented.</li>
</ul>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As a result, even a premium coating over poorly prepared steel fails sooner than a basic coating over a well-blasted surface. That is why surface preparation is the most critical step of the painting process.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" style="font-size:24px"><strong>What Is the Sa 2.5 Cleanliness Standard?</strong></h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The cleanliness reached by blasting is graded under the international ISO 8501-1 standard as Sa 1, Sa 2, Sa 2.5, and Sa 3. For painting, sheet and profile blasting usually targets Sa 2.5 (“near-white metal”), where almost all rust and mill scale has been removed.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">How rough the surface is — the profile depth — is measured as Rz under ISO 8503. The right profile keeps the paint from sitting on a surface that is either too smooth or too deep, delivering ideal adhesion.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" style="font-size:24px"><strong>Shot Blasting vs Manual Surface Cleaning</strong></h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The two methods most often compared for pre-paint preparation are machine shot blasting and manual (grinding/sanding) cleaning. The table below summarizes the key differences:</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Manual cleaning suits small repairs or spots where blasting is not possible. For mass production and large sheets and profiles, shot blasting is clearly ahead on speed, consistency, and surface quality.</p>
